Poorly Paw

Cornel took Troy to the vet this morning as he had been licking it for a few days. We had a look yesterday and noticed some strange sore type thing, it looked almost like something was in there.
He is now on antibiotics and needs to go back to see the vet on Monday. They took the head of that thing off, but couldn't see anything in it as such and they said that there would be puss if it was something like a grass seed...

All very strange... We'll see how it goes.

(And we managed a whole week last week without the vet... how about that! Ha ha...)

An argument about Troy in the park

On Wednesday night, I took Troy out for a walk (as usual Cornel hadn't...). About half way round, I met an ex-WTDT member with his Weimaraner and his friends with a smaller dog. I simply asked them not to let their dogs up to Troy. Troy was about 2 yards away from the dogs and sat nicely. He didn't react at all, was just showing curiosity and watched them pretty relaxed.

I then walked on and saw a dog in the distance. I stopped and the owners shouted that "he only wants to play". I shout back "this one doesn't". They then tried to call their dog back who totally ignored them. The dog came up to Troy, who up to this point has not reacted at all, just stood calmly right next to me waiting. The staffie cross came right up to Troy, Troy had a sniff, the dog sniffed him... then it got too much for Troy and he snapped at the dog, who retaliated. They stopped after just a couple of seconds and the owner was finally close enough to shoo their dog away!

I then got told that a dog like this should be muzzled... I told them that MY dog was UNDER CONTROL, whilst their wasn't... which they didn't agree at all. They argued that their off-lead dog that totally ignores all their attempts to recall him and runs up to an on-lead dog is under control, whilst an on-lead dog that was patiently waiting by my left leg was out of control just because he reacted when the other dog got too close for comfort! Makes sense... not! (I also got told that Troy was "an f...ing ugly thing"... well, the other owner didn't have the prettiest face either... :-) ).

Shame. Troy was so good. He didn't react at all when the dog approached. He didn't react either when the dog came up and sniffed him, Troy sniffed back, but after a few seconds it got too uncomfortable for him (and me pulling him away and being very tense certainly didn't help either) and he went for the dog! But for a long time, he DIDN'T REACT! What an achievement compared to how he used to be when he just saw a dog in the distance.

To hopefully progress this further now, Jacqui will do more TTouch with him and hopefully this will help him to fully relax around other dogs!

In a way, it is a bit more difficult on walks now. Before people (and dogs) could see from a distance that Troy didn't like other dogs because he used to lunge and bark long before they got anywhere near him. Whereas now, he doesn't react and actually appears quite relaxed until the dogs come right up to him and sniff! So there is no warning and when I say that he doesn't like dogs, people obviously don't believe me anymore until their dog gets snapped at! - And then I get shouted at!

I will not muzzle Troy, he has never injured a dog as this is not his intention at all! I expect respect from people on walks; I control my dogs around other dogs - and I expect the same from others. If my off-lead dogs accidently go up to on-lead dog, then I grab them as quickly as I can and appologise. If the on-lead dog react aggressively, I certainly don't blame the other owners if their dog is on lead! I take responsibility for that.

I was really upset and annoyed about the incident on Wednesday night... but I am calmer now and although I got shouted at and Troy did react, he actually did very well and just a couple of years ago, it would have been a totally different story altogether.
